Why’d I jump into this after all?
Before I was recruited to join and build Covert Recruiting as President, the highest “level” I’d really attained was becoming the VP of my homeowners association. I mean, that’s a pretty big deal. SOMEONE has to approve of changes to our landscaping budget…
I’d been in this business a long time. Started as a basic sourcer for a huge corporate firm, moved onto a boutique tech recruiting shop, then to a VERY specialized but small firm, then a very innovative and aggressive company that was truly a “one stop” shop.
I really felt like I learned new and different things at every stop. Early on, I’d been an individual contributor, then later took on more mentor and leadership responsibilities. The more of that I took on, the more I liked it.
Most recruiters have a story of “if I called the shots, I’d do XYZ differently.” The recruiting world is weird. Really weird. There’s a lot of good recruiters out there, but a whole TON of bad ones. They make it tougher on the good ones, as it sours perception of the industry as a whole. So saying that – there’s a big, long list of ideas that we all keep jotted somewhere on how to make that all better.
When I was approached to join Covert, all those things aligned. I could take my broad experiences, bring in my “from scratch” ideas, and give it a shot. This is the wildest economy and market I’ve seen. No better time to gamble on yourself and give it a go.
