The old saying is “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” Yeah, no. It’s WHO KNOWS YOU.
I’m a big believer in trying to build your own brand. I will also readily admit that I’m not at all an expert at it. What my focus has been in this content I’ve written is to (hopefully) make it clear that there are some useful things about knowing… Me.
Ideally, if job seekers, companies, or other business-y types in the industry (or the LinkedIn world) would think of ME when they need crucial roles filled, want to find a new gig, or learn about recruiting in general. Even “hey I know this guy that can do X, Y, Z, give him a call” is a big deal.
What I do think is important is to be really authentic, consistent, and try to put something out there that you’d like to read for yourself. Add some humor too?
But if for whatever reason you keep doing this, hopefully people will start to think of you or refer people – knowing that you’ve got something worthwhile. I’m pretty sure that’s brand building.
This is stuff I tell my candidates all the time. There’s no rules, just get something out there that showcases YOU. There’s like a half billion LI members. Most are boring. Stand out. I think it makes a difference.
