Ever make a big mistake when in your job search or in an interview?
Did you ever miss a scheduled interview, blank on an easy question from a manager, or botch things so bad you had no chance of saving yourself? How did you overcome it or how did you bounce back?
My favorite example (well now…) was back a year to two after college. I got referred to a sales company by a buddy and was in the interview. I was doing well. They were giving me good feedback, and I was super excited about the job. The one buddy was really liking his time at the company, was bragging about making his $100k or something (which was the equivalent of $30M per year to a naive 24 year old me), and I was apparently a “lock” to get it.
Then one of the two interviewers ends with this question:
“What’s this guy’s name?” (as he points to his partner…)
I had no clue. Blank. He did introduce himself earlier. His name was super uncommon, like Orion or something, but I was lost.
It cost me the job. I “didn’t pay attention to important details” they said. That sucked.
Obviously, you’ve got to remember names, and sometimes crap happens. This one’s kinda funny to me now, but I still think about it. Keep going and do better next time.
