Not everyone knows how “recruiting” works. And that’s ok. I’ve talked to probably thousands of candidates in the last ten years. Some were experienced job seekers, some had not applied to anything new in years. I find it’s very important to walk through how actually recruiters work, who we work with, and clearly talk about every step of the way. A job move is one of the most important moments in a person’s life, so our duty is to make it so there’s NO secrets.
Same goes for my clients. A common complaint is that yeah, they work with recruiters, but they don’t know the candidate’s story, where they’re at in a search, etc. Sometimes all they get is an info-free email with 15 resumes and a note with “ok, who do you want to talk with?” There’s almost always a smiley added there too.
Recruiting can be really hard, but in the end it’s simple. Be upfront, be honest, be clear.
